It was difficult for people to hear popular music in the 1950s without buying the singers record. this is because the radio at that time could by law only play around 10 hours of records over the radio per week this was called needle time. So they would on a saturday night have like a chart show of all the popular records of the week. What radio stations did during the week was they had other unknown bands on to cover the songs, so they wouldn't have to play the record and use up the precious record time.

These stations became very popular and over time the legal radio had to make changes because people wasn't listening, they got rid of the needle time and hired all the pirate radio presenters and put them to work for them.
