Sinead O'Conner - Nothing compares 2U
This song was originally written and composed by Prince were it didn't make an impact and was just one of his side projects. It was later made famous by the Irish recording artist Sinead O'Conner who wasn't heard of before this song, it became a worldwide hit in 1990 because of the iconic music video. The video was mainly shot in Paris and directed by John Maybury. The video mainly consists of a close up on Sinead O'Connor's face as she sings the lyrics. the rest of the video is of her walking through the Parc de Saint-Cloud in Paris. towards the end of the video two tears roll down her face on each cheek. her tears were unplanned and she stated on "VH1's 100 greatest songs of the 90s" that it was caused because of the lyric "All the flowers that you planted, mother/in the back yard/ all died when you went away", because she had a very complex relationship with her late mother who used to abuse her in childhood. The clip won three "moonmen" at the "1990 MTV Video Music Awards: Video of the year.
Finding the right music
I am going to be sourcing non copyrighted music by using sites like "www.unsigned.com", "www.myspace.com" and "www.youtube.com" for my music project. I will be emailing the artists asking for the permission to use their music. I will be telling them that I am doing a project for my A-levels media coursework and that I am lip syncing with a track.
This is an example of the email I will be sending to the artists. The parts in red are which I would change depending on the artists I was emailing to.
I am taking part in a project in my A level Media class where i will be making a video for a music track and lip synching myself and my group with it. It is due to this that i find myself needing to request to use one of your own tracks and would like to request permission to do so. I really enjoyed them and especially "SONG" was excellent. It would be much appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read my email.
Thank you and look forward to your response,

Finding the right music
This is an example of a failed request for permission to use a bands music. It could be because they have broken up or the email is just not in use any longer but without a way of contacting the band we cannot use their music in our video.

Non-copyright music
Copyright is a legal concept which gives the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it. It enables the copyright holder to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work and who may financially benefit from it. In regards to copyrighted music the artists or record company have copyrighted the most popular music so that know one could use it to their benefit or steal it for themselves. It is important for the artist to copyright their music to ensure they make money from it. they make the most money from advertisements and in films which if they weren't copyrighted then they wouldn't have to pay the artists.
This could cause problems and issues as for my music video I will have to use non-copy righted music, or get permission to use it or it is illegal as the video will be going onto youtube. If I did use copy righted music on my video it could be removed from youtube and I could even be prosecuted.

My Two Favorite Music Video's
I like this video because of the music and the story the video tells. Even though its a few minutes long the story is portrayed and I understand what is happening. Its different than most music videos which just have people singing to a camera.
This is one of my favorite music videos as it is completely different to any others that i've seen. I like how they made it look like a video game and each band member has their own challenge they have to complete.
The Brief
My task is to produce a music 'promo' video this will involve the planning, filming and editing of the video, it will be up to 5 minutes long and I will be working along with Sean Lusted. I will also be producing a 'digipak' (six panels) for its release on CD, and a magazine advertisement for the 'digipak'.
